NACOGDOCHES - The George Grigsby family will receive the Agriculture Family of the Year award sponsored by Tipton Ford at the 10th Annual Agriculture Appreciation and Awareness Banquet, Monday evening, Apr. 4 at Banita Creek Hall.

George and Edna Myrl Grigsby’s son Greg and his family currently run the family farm, and Greg gives all the credit to his mom and dad for the business that he now operates. “They put this farm together by purchasing much of the land from all the heirs over the years,” Greg said.

The Grigsby family has been farming in Nacogdoches County for more than 100 years, beginning the early days as a row crop and cattle farm. The family raised peanuts, cotton and cattle to name a few. The farm became a poultry farm in 1969 when George built the first broiler houses. Greg was a five-year-old child when the first poultry houses were built. In the late 70s, the farm expanded as more houses were built.

The present day farm consists of several hundred acres and includes a 16 broiler house farm as well as a cattle operation.

“In addition to broilers, the family manages more than 150 head of cattle,” said Andy Gardner, president of Austin Bank, N.A. - Garrison branch. “Greg operates the farm today along with help from his mother Edna Myrl who takes care of the bookkeeping side of the business.”

Greg graduated from Nacogdoches I.S.D. He attended Texas A&M University in College Station where he earned a degree in agribusiness. After graduation from college, Greg moved home and went into a partnership with his dad George operating the family dairy farm.

“Together, the family operated the dairy from 1986 until 1991,” Gardner said. “Then Greg moved to Temple where he worked for Walmart for about 18 months. He moved back home and worked for Dr. Weatherly while waiting for his contract from Pilgrim’s Pride to grow broilers on the family farm.”

Six broiler houses were added to the farm in 1995, two more houses in 1997 and four more houses in 2005. George Grigsby passed away on Nov. 5, 2008, and Greg “picked up where Dad left off.” Four houses were added in 2009 for a total of 16 houses. Currently the Grigsby farm is a grower for Tyson.
