Nacogdoches downtown merchants are readying themselves now for the 20th Annual Texas Blueberry Festival, presented by Brookshire Brothers, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Saturday, June 13. The Texas’ most delicious festival brings thousands of people to the brick streets, and smart business owners and managers are making the most of the blueberry opportunity.
Rebecca Frazer at Hotel Fredonia invites everyone to “Go Blue” with blueberry cocktails and menu specials June 7 through 14.
“On June 12, join us for our first crawfish boil that will include crawfish for $4.99 a pound, potatoes, corn and Andouille sausage and snow crab for $14.99 a pound. Sit back and relax while you listen to the live music on the patio,” Frazer said. “And for a blueberry bonus, indulge yourself with our Blueberry Breakfast Buffet on the 13th from 6:30 to 10 a.m.”
Hotel Fredonia, located at 200 N. Fredonia St., is the place to kick back on Saturday after the festival with live entertainment on the patio from 7:30 to 10 p.m.
“The Legendary Mystics Lounge in Morning Glory Yoga Studios will have a special treat for visitors during the festival between 1 and 3 in the afternoon,” said Jongy Lipshutz, Libby Hill Woodworks owner. “The yoga studio and Libby Hill Woodworks in cooperation with Soundrascals.com will present ‘Hot Daze-Cool Jazz’ featuring Susie Lower and the Jazz Daddy’s.”
Morning Glory Yoga Studio is located at 207 E. Main St.
For more than a month, Heart of Texas Gift Gallery owner Gerry Larabee has stocked sweet blueberry treats.
“I added a new blueberry food line that has blueberry taffy, gummies, candy stixs, tea, coffee and a milk chocolate cordial with a blueberry center. Coming soon is blueberry jam and honey,” Larabee said. “That’s in addition to the ice cream sundaes and floats that we always make during the festival. The sundae is made with fresh blueberries, and the float is made with a blue cream soda, so it’s really pretty. And we top it with fresh blueberries.”
Heart of Texas, 110 S. Pecan St., offers more blueberry-themed items year-round including mugs, tea towels and magnets.
Pick up jars of blueberry preserves at Lyric’s LaTeeDas & OohLaLas, 409 E. Main St., while watching Eric Burbige in his huge blue cowboy hat perform his juggling show on festival day.
Owner Lyric Muckleroy will offer all blue quilt fabric at 25% off beginning Monday, June 8 and ending June 13. “And during the festival, I’ll have a ‘buy 4, and get one free’ sale on the Coyote Falls preserves and sauces,” Muckleroy said.
Texas Blueberry Festival visitors will find something for everyone with the blueberry pancake breakfast, pie eating contests, the nationally and state sanctioned Paul Kendrick Memorial 42 Tourney, live entertainment on three stages, the horse shoes and washers tourney, kids bounce park and other children’s events, just to list a few things.
According to Chairwoman Michelle Smith, two new events will be at the festival.
“Cowboy Max will give his daring exhibition of trick roping and bullwhip stunts in his wooly chaps,” said Smith. “He'll also assist gourmet chefs in the Cookin’ Up the Blues cooking demonstrations happening in the CBTx lobby. Celebrity chefs will be sizzling up some tasty blueberry delights.”
The celebrity chefs appearing during Cookin’ Up the Blues are Camilla Saulsbury, Pepperidge Farm representative, www.camillacooks.com, Texas AgriLife Extension Service Jr. Chef Member Molly Perkins, Family and Consumer Sciences Agent Karen Tucker and other agents from the district.
