NACOGDOCHES — Nacogdoches High School cosmetology students are heading to state competition after taking honors at the Skills USA District 7 competition in Beaumont.
Students worked on projects several weeks and compiled a notebook displaying the finished products. The projects are currently on display in the Cosmetology department at NHS.
One competitions called for students to study 1,000 questions, as well as to know every bone in the face and hand.
“For these students to do work of this caliber and keep up with all of their regular work as well, Mrs. Holland and the students are to be commended,” said Jeannie Summers, Nacogdoches ISD Director of Career and Technical Education.
Honors included:
• Photo Panel — Ashlon Whitaker, Marisa Perez, Jennifer Cobos, Cristina Garcia and Tania Roma, first place, state qualifier;
• Innovative Salon Model — Cassandra Bodle, second place, state qualifier;
• Fantasy Style — Lyndsea Matlock, first place and Emily Merriman, second place; state qualifiers;
• Evening Updo — Monica Saldana, 1st place, state qualifier;
• Nail Art— Daisy Martinez, Ana Davalos, Monica Ibarra, and Cintia Garcia, first place, state qualifiers.
Texas SkillsUSA is a “non-profit Youth organization that facilitates Trade and Industry Education, enhances curriculum and involves all students. Students develop essential skills such as communication and teamwork. They also gain a competitive edge in the work force. Teachers benefit as well by enhancing their occupational education programs, improve attitudes in the classroom and gain local business support and participation.”
