State of the County and City delivered at luncheon
County Judge Joe English and Mayor Roger Van Horn will each give a presentation on local government issues at the Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce Fourth Friday Luncheon, noon to 1 p.m., Feb. 27 at Hotel Fredonia.
“In the present economic environment, my focus will be the City’s budget, expanding our tax base and the importance of cooperation between public and private entities to better Nacogdoches ,” said Mayor Van Horn. “Transportation and the City’s relationship with SFA are also timely subjects.”
Van Horn moved to Nacogdoches in 1975. Originally from Tulsa, Okla., he spent five years in the US Army after attending college and graduate school.
In Nacogdoches, Van Horn has practiced general family dentistry for 34 years and counting. He served as Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce President in 1987, on the Board of Directors of Fredonia State Bank and Advisory Board of BancorpSouth, and a member and Chairman of the Planning and Zoning Commission. He is a member of the First Methodist Church in Nacogdoches.
Judge Joe English’s family has lived in the East Texas area since the early 1820’s, and he states he has enjoyed the tradition and colorful history of our area and is proud of his past.
In the late 1990’s English became active in local politics. In 2004, he ran for the office of County Republican Chair, an office that he held until November of 2005, when he resigned to run for the office of County Judge . While working with the local party, he represented citizens as a Delegate to the State Convention’s in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008. During the 2004 convention he had the opportunity to sit on the State Committee representing Senate District 3 in writing the State Republican Party Platform.
Before being elected to office English worked as a Medical Technologist at Memorial Hospital for 17 years. He holds lab registries in medical technology, and also histology by the American Society of Clinical Pathology.
English is married to his wife DiAnna who works as a nurse for a local health clinic, and together they have three children.
The information presented is vital for all local businesses, and the luncheon serves as the Nacogdoches County Chamber’s monthly membership meeting.
