NACOGDOCHES — Nacogdoches ISD campuses and organizations are honoring veterans with special programs and participation in the Veteran’s Day Parade through downtown Nacogdoches.
“It is important for our students to honor the service of our military men and women,” said NISD Superintendent Dr. Fred Hayes. “This is a great time to teach them the value of our veterans to this country.”
NISD’s Emeline Carpenter Academy of Technology and Science and Thomas J. Rusk Academy of Fine Arts each have Veteran’s Day Programs for students to show appreciation.
Carpenter is having its 13th Annual Veterans’ Day Assembly and Reception on Monday, Nov. 11, at 8:30 am at the elementary school.
The program will be led by the fourth and fifth grade ECATS Choir. Fifth graders also will perform an additional patriotic song, Taps will be played in honor of fallen soldiers, and each branch of the military will be saluted.
All veterans are welcomed and encouraged to attend. Veterans' attending will be recognized and asked if they would like to speak. A reception will follow the program.

Brooks-Quinn-Jones Elementary School's Veteran's Day Program begins at 7:40 a.m., Monday, Nov. 11, during "Jump Start" with the entire school body participating.
The school will honor the flags and have a moment of silent. Then, the BQJ Choir will sing a song commemorating Veterans. In addition, BQJ has a Wall of Honor in the main hall of the school, which features pictures and names of veterans that are family members or friends of BQJ students.
Thomas J. Rusk’s Veteran’s Day Program also will be Monday, Nov. 11, at 2 p.m. in the TJR auditorium. Guest speaker will be Glenn Oldham, retired Navy.
The school’s choir will provide music and narration, and the Stephen F. Austin State University Guard will present the flags.
Veterans and active military personnel also are invited to be honored guests for this day of commemoration.
A number of NISD groups will take part in the downtown Veteran’s Day Parade on Saturday, Nov. 9. Participants will line up at 9 a.m. and the parade kicks off at 10 a.m.
Among those to walk the brick streets will be the Golden Dragons Marching Band, the Dragonettes, the NHS Cheerleaders, and the Mike Moses and McMichael
