CHIRENO, TX (KTRE) - Chireno High School has always been successful in athletics and academics.

"Chireno has always been known for sports,” said CHS high school senior Carlie Harris.

The competition, however, has gotten a little more theatrical of late. The high school's theater program is headed to the state finals in the UIL One-Act Play Competition.

Chireno has gotten past the second round in the past.

"Area has always been our stopping,” said CHS Theatre Director Michael Powell. “Area is where there's 48 out of 200 plays left. So we've always been in the top 25 percent, but to get to state and be in the top two percent is pretty cool".

"The fact that we went to regionals is incredible, and now we're going to state and it's mind blowing,” said CHS senior Makaela Smith.

These thespians have been working hard since November on their 40-minute masterpiece.

They've made it past four rounds of judges, who enjoyed their performance, but before that final opening curtain in Austin, Chireno will showcase their talent to the public at Stephen F. Austin State University's Turner Auditorium on Wednesday.

"Turner, for a lot of the people that have been in the theater program, we have seen shows there,” Harris said. “It’s a huge stage, and it’s so beautiful.”

"We get to perform in Turner Auditorium, which seats a lot of people and that's just awesome,” Smith exclaimed. “We have people coming up to us saying they’re going to come to our show and that's just great."

Chireno's theater students hope Deep East Texas comes out too see the huge talent their small school harbors.

"We're getting our name out there in a different way other than sports, and it's great because we show our school is well-rounded.”

They hope judges in Austin see it as well on May 23rd.

The performance Wednesday will be at 6:30 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. Admission is free.

Woodville, Martinville, and Colmesneil will also be competing in the UIL State One-Act Play Competition.
