PAL kicks off online funding campaign
Posted 09/08/2014

The days will soon be cooling off, but the activities of Nacogdoches Parks Advocacy League (PAL) are still heating up asmembers work behind the scenes for what they hope will culminate in some major park upgrades for next summer. The focus now for the group is obtaining 501(c)3 non-profit status, a federal tax designation that will allow PAL to pursue major funding and donors.  The funding campaign site, which will be publicized via social media can be found at http://igg.me/at/PALNac beginning on September 5.

PAL is raising money for the state and federal filing fees with a crowd-sourcing online Indiegogo campaign with a goal of $800. The campaign kicks off this Friday, to coincide with the PAL in the Parks play date and will conclude 16 days later on September 20, when the group will have a booth at the Farmers Market Fall Fling to make a final push, if needed.“We are so grateful for both the moral and financial support the community has shown us so far,” says PAL president Mary Turner. “We are ready to get the ball rolling with new equipment, not the least of which is a public aquatic facility like a splash pad, but that costs serious money. Our donors have been generous, giving from their hearts, even when they don’t have a lot to give.We have already identified some major grants and donors available to us, but they do require non-profit status to apply. We are confident that with just a little effort from our supportive community, we will reach our filing fee goal quickly so we can get to work on exciting upgrades our community wants and needs.”

PAL has received several hundred dollars in donations already through their designated, tax-exempt account with the city.  Those donations, which were specified for park upgrades and equipment, will not be used toward the group’s non-profit filing fees.PAL has also received pro bono legal services for the organization and filing of the 501(c)3 documents from local attorney Kyle Post.

PAL has chosen the web site Indiegogo to raise their funds because of its friendliness to non-profit, mission-driven organizations and its availability 24 hours a day online. “A strong social media presence has already proven to be a huge asset to PAL,” says Turner. “We hope that our online support base can then click through easily and help us keep the momentum we’ve enjoyed since our quick start early in the summer. We’re so close to a huge step forward; we just need a little push.”

Similar to other crowd-sourcing funding sites, Indiegogo allows donors to make pledges to PAL in any amount to reach their goal.  Once the filing fee goal is achieved, donations may still be accepted any time online through the PAL web site donation page, which details how the money may be spent.  Donors to PAL’s Indiegogo campaign may receive, upon request via email to palnacogdoches@gmail.com, a letter recognizing their tax-deductible donation after the group has received official recognition from the Internal Revenue Service.  For those not interested in a tax deduction, other perks ranging from t-shirts and free services at Woodland Hills Golf Course to a custom-prepared gourmet picnic in the park are available to contributors through the donation site.

Nacogdoches PAL (Parks Advocacy League) is a community-action group founded in June 2014 by a group of citizens to improve the aesthetics and function of Nacogdoches City parks and park facilities for year-round enjoyment by the whole community via organized stewardship and funding development.
