Ted Thompson named Ag Educator of the Year

By Carolyn Whitney

Ted Thompson, agricultural science teacher at Central Heights I.S.D., will
be honored as the 2014 Ag Educator of the Year at this year's 14th Annual
Agriculture Appreciation and Awareness Banquet. Larry Poe, a member of the
Nacogdoches County Agribusiness Committee, nominated Thompson for his
outstanding performance as an agriculture educator through the years.

Thompson was born in Nacogdoches to Albert and Gay Thompson. He said that
his main influence to teach agriculture was his high school teacher, Mr.
Poe. When Thompson graduated Nacogdoches high school, he entered the
agriculture program at Stephen F. Austin State University in 1976. In July
of 1984, Thompson began his career as an ag teacher at Splendora High School
in Houston. He taught at Overton High School in Rusk and then Nacogdoches
High School before moving to Central Heights High School, where he has
taught for the last 12 years.

Poe worked alongside Thompson for 10 years. "Ted takes his teaching very
seriously," Poe said. "He has trained a lot of kids, particularly in the
wildlife and forestry area, and he is very good at what he does. He is very
deserving of the award and the recognition he has received."

Thompson has also been named Teacher of the Year by the State Forestry
Association, and his forestry and wildlife teams have placed in several
state contests. In 2011 they placed third in the National Forestry contest,
one of their highest scoring accomplishments. His teams have gone to
nationals in the Southern Regency Forestry contest every year, and they have
made it to the Top 10 in both judging and leadership categories.

Thompson learned he would be the 2014 Ag Educator when he received a phone
call from Larry Poe a month ago. "I feel very honored to be selected as the
Ag Educator of the year," he said, "and feel honored to have my name
included with some of the people that have been past representatives of this
award."
