NACOGDOCHES — Parents can become an even more integral part of the Nacogdoches Independent School District with the new Parents Are Leaders group.
The program seeks to mobilize parents into a proactive force to help determine needs of the district, problems facing students today and assist in nurturing the positives within NISD.
“We would like the P.A.L.s of NISD program to engage parents in a partnership that gives them input into the future of our schools and makes our district even stronger” said Superintendent Dr. Fred Hayes.
At least 20-30 parents are being sought to participate.
NISD’s recently-developed communication plan seeks a high level of parent engagement at the district and school level. NISD communications coordinator Rayanne Schmid said the formation of the Parents as Leaders program began at a cellular level.
Facebook comments from some NISD parents reinforced the immediate need for such a team.
“A mother of four NISD students, Sherry Slowikowski, proposed forming a parent group while talking through a recent campus issue with other moms on our Facebook page,” Schmid said. “She said, ‘This type of thing can happen anywhere but we all (the entire community) need to come together and find solid solutions to the problems facing this school district.’”
Schmid called the mom and began discussing the opportunity to join forces for a stronger district.
Slowikowski jumped into action locating some parents to help serve on P.A.L.s, but more are needed.
“It would be ideal to have every grade level represented,” said NISD communications coordinator Rayanne Schmid, who is organizing the organization.
The group will have monthly meetings and special task forces that will encompass plans of action as determined by the group. Participants also will have the opportunity to apply for a first-time leadership program being offered in October 2013.
