NISD students learn dangers of drugs, alcohol and tobacco during annual Red Ribbon Week, Oct. 22-26

OCTOBER 17, 2012                                                     FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NACOGDOCHES — Students at all eight Nacogdoches Independent School District campuses will spend the week of Oct. 22-26 learning about the dangers of substance abuse during National Red Ribbon Week.

Drug Free banners at each NISD school will be filled with signatures of students who pledge to avoid substance abuse.

Wearing red ribbons to show intolerance for drug use began 27 years ago. The murder of DEA agent Kiki Camarena in 1985 by drug traffickers in Mexico City led the National Family Partnership, formerly the National Federation of Parents for Drug Free Youth, to start the campaign.

To locally honor the week and show their support of a drug free lifestyle, each campus has chosen daily themes that tie to an opportunity to wear unique items to school. For example, on Tuesday, Oct. 23, students at Nettie Marshall Academy of Dual Language will celebrate Drugs Turn You Inside Out and can wear their Polo shirts inside out to recognize the theme.

Among the other slated activities, Thomas J. Rusk Academy for the Fine Arts plans to have a door decorating contest and Nacogdoches High School will have a bracelet giveaway, both on Wednesday, Oct. 24.

Participation in the themes is not required, but school officials said they encourage every student to share in the activities and celebrate the commitment to be drug free.
