Righteous Among the Nations Award to be PRESENTED to Texas resident

Houston, Texas August 23, 2012

The Consulate General of Israel to the Southwest is honored to announce that the award of Righteous Among the Nations will be presented posthumously to Dr. Elena Mamantova, an obstetrician during WWII.  The award will be presented to Nacogdoches resident Mrs. Helen Dusher on behalf of her late mother on Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at 5:30 at the Nacogdoches City Hall, Nacogdoches, Texas.

The Righteous Among the Nations award was created by Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Authority.  The Righteous are defined as non-Jews who risked their lives to save Jews during the Holocaust. A commission headed by a justice of the Supreme Court of Israel has been charged with the duty of awarding this honorary title.

Dr. Mamantova was awarded this title for her heroic act of safely delivering a Jewish baby boy during the Holocaust against strict laws forbidding such acts. Dr. Mamantova acted at great risk to own her life.

 The Honorable Maya Kadosh, Deputy Consul General of Israel to the Southwest will be presenting the award to Mrs. Dusher.  The Deputy Consul General to Germany and the Mayor and City Council of Nacogdoches will also be on hand for the ceremony.
