Hydrex Environmental named Medium Business of the Year

Membership and Marketing Manager
The Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce has named Hydrex Environmental, Inc. as the 2011 Medium Business of the Year. The award, sponsored by Regions Bank, is one of three Gary Justice Business Excellence Awards given annually by the chamber.
Hydrex will be recognized at the Chamber’s 90th Annual Meeting and Membership Banquet presented by Andrews & Andrews Attorneys at Law, Tuesday, Sep. 27, 6 p.m. in the SFA Grand Ballroom.
The company was founded in 1994 by Glen Collier, Professional Geoscientist (P.G.) and now a senior hydrogeologist. Increasing environmental regulations, including those for municipal solid waste facilities, drove the formation of the business. Hydrex projects include environmental compliance, industrial and municipal solid waste management, property development and natural resource management. Their business philosophy is a firm commitment to personal service, a willingness to meet the needs of each client and a dedication to quality work.
Natural Resource Manager Clayton Collier said a main focus for the company is on groundwater and surface water management. “We help entities manage water supplies throughout the region,” he said.
Hydrex works with private industries that use large quantities of water, and with groundwater conservation districts that are required to create groundwater management plans approved by the Texas Water Development Board.
Glen’s extensive experience in groundwater, including a Master Drillers License, is key to the company’s success in groundwater work.
According to Clayton, utilizing cutting-edge technology keeps Hydrex ahead of the competition.
By investing in Geographical Information System (GIS) technology, Hydrex clients have access to online interactive mapping with 3-D subsurface modeling.
“Project information is available to the client through a GIS server. It’s a convenience for clients to have access to information when outside the office,” Clayton said. “During travel or in the field, a person can log in and check data that Hydrex has provided, and access their project information that Hydrex loaded for them.”
Hydrex looks to Stephen F. Austin State University for its workforce.
Many Hydrex employees are products of SFA’s various science programs - graduates with course studies in GIS analysis, environmental and natural resource sciences that include wetlands study, geology, hydrogeology and biology. Hydrex supports SFA with the creation of an endowed scholarship fund for students in environmental science studies. The scholarship is named after Raymond “Chick” Dolezel, P.G., a Hydrex senior soil scientist.
“We’ve hired approximately 37 SFA graduates during the life of the company,” Clayton said. “We average 20 to 25 employees on the payroll and provide internship opportunities for SFA students. We offer salaries that support a great lifestyle in a great town.”
The company includes four professional geoscientists as well as one professional engineer who specializes in air permits and landfill gas management systems. One employee, Trae Scarborough, P.G., started working at Hydrex while a student at SFA. He has been with the company for more than 10 years and manages special groundwater projects.
Services provided by Hydrex include phase I and II environmental site assessment, wetlands delineation, groundwater and soil sampling, solid waste facility permitting, industrial compliance and remediation.
