Nacogdoches’ National Travel and Tourism Week set for May 7-15

The second annual Nacogdoches’ Travel and Tourism Week will be held May 7-15, 2011 this year in conjunction with National and Texas Travel and Tourism Week. Nacogodoches, as well as communities across Texas and the nation, will take this opportunity to champion the benefits of travel and to acknowledge travel industry workers.



            New to this year’s National Travel and Tourism Week is Nacogdoches Destination Training, a FREE program that offers essential training for hospitality industry employees. Front desk, hotel bell staff, guest services, sales managers, gas station attendants, museum and restaurant staff... the list goes on! Excellent customer service is a vital key to the lifeline of all successful businesses as well as the success of the tourism industry here in Nacogdoches. The Nacogdoches Convention & Visitors Bureau Destination Training will benefit your business and arm your employees with firsthand knowledge of Nacogdoches’ current and new attractions, how to speak "Texas Friendly," ensuring top-notch customer service, upcoming events, ways to maximize tips and much more.

            To show unity for travel and tourism, we ask for the Nacogdoches community to wear red on Wednesday, May 11, 2011. Wearing red is a hospitality industry practice that dates back many years and is a very easy activity to show support for National Travel and Tourism Week. Historic Downtown Nacogdoches will be abuzz this year during National Travel and Tourism Week. Enjoy lunch on the red brick streets of historic downtown Nacogdoches from 12 to 1 p.m. every Friday in May. Music to Lunch By is a free event; however patrons are encouraged to purchase lunch from one of the great downtown eateries that will be catering each Friday. Brown bag lunches are available for $7.00. Every Saturday in May, discover the history and charm of the Oldest Town in Texas during the 1.5 hour walking tour through historic downtown Nacogdoches every Saturday in May! Tickets available at the Visitor Center, 200 E. Main, for $2 adults; children 12 and under are free! Tour starts at the Visitor Center at 10:30 a.m.



            "The walking tours are a wonderful opportunity for locals and visitors to learn more about the city of Nacogdoches and the history that makes it unique," said Mora. “Our volunteer guides are very knowledgeable about local history and help make the tours entertaining, as well as informative.”



            Be sure to participate in some of the special events planned for this one week only. Immerse yourself in cultural tourism by visiting all of Nacogdoches’ historic sites with the "Treasures of Nacogdoches County" map to receive prizes at all 5 sites! Maps can be picked up at the Visitor Center, 200 E. Main, or online at www.visitnacogdoches.org. You will get a stamp and prize at each place that you visit. Visit at least 3 historic sites and return map to the Visitor Center, 200 E. Main, to receive a free "Nacogdoches Loves Tourism" t-shirt. Stop by the Visitor Center, 200 E. Main, anytime during the week and grab a FREE National Travel and Tourism Week bottled water and popcorn, pick up a "National Travel and Tourism Week" coupon sheet, and sign-up for a free night stay/dinner for two giveaways. Free night stays from Holiday Inn Express, Hotel Fredonia, and the Jones House Bed and Breakfast and dinner for two from Clear Springs Restaurant, Popeyes Chicken and Biscuits, and Posados Café.
