TxDOT Work on FM 2609/Austin Street in Nacogdoches set to begin

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS--A pre-construction meeting was held in the Nacogdoches Area Office last week to finalize plans for a construction project scheduled to begin January 2.

Work is scheduled to begin on FM 2609/Austin Street in Nacogdoches that will widen the roadway from two to four lanes from North Street to Raguet Street. Included in the project will be the construction of sidewalks along the roadway and the addition of a traffic signal at the intersection of Austin Street and Raguet Street.

Drewery Construction, Nacogdoches, will serve as contractor for the $2.9 million project that should be completed by early spring, 2020, weather permitting.

"We are excited to see this project begin," said Rhonda Oaks, public information officer for the Lufkin District. "With the wider roadway, the addition of sidewalks and a traffic signal, we believe safety will be enhanced in this area where there are many pedestrians and college traffic."

The roadway will remain closed to through traffic for the duration of the project, but residents inside the project limits will have access to their property. Motorists are urged to reduce speed in the area of Austin and Raguet streets, stay alert to workers, moving equipment and prepare for possible delays.
