Story Time @ Library
Posted 05 - 26 - 2016

The Judy B. McDonald Public Library offers story time every Wednesday at 10:00 am for all children and their families.

“We encourage all families to bring their children. No child is too young to benefit from hearing stories. Studies have shown that the earlier children are exposed to reading, the greater their reading achievement will be. Listening to stories stimulates speech and cognitive development. Older children can benefit from the social interaction of story time and the playtime afterward. Kids who might feel they’re too old for story time should still be encouraged to listen to stories end up having a great time,” said Mercedes Franks, library director.

“All children should be encouraged to read during the summer to prevent “summer slide.” Studies have shown that children who do not read during the summer often spend the first few weeks of school catching up but children who read during the summer do not experience this reading loss. This reading loss is cumulative over the course of their education. Borrowing books from the library is an easy and free way to prevent that reading loss,” said Mercedes Franks.

The public library will offer various prizes for children who participate in the summer reading and programs. The Summer Reading Kick-Off will be Saturday, June 4th from 12-3 pm. For more information about library programs, please call 559-2970 or follow us online at or on Facebook.
