Celebrating Students and Their Success in the Texas Bluebonnet Award Program

“Battle of the Bluebonnet Books,” organized by theNacogdoches ISD elementary school librarians, will be on May 29, 2015 at 10 a.m. in the Nacogdoches ISD District Support Center board room.

Elementary schools participating in the annual “Battle of the Bluebonnet Books” competition include:

·         Brooks-Quinn-Jones Elementary School

·         Fredonia Elementary School

·         Raguet Elementary School

·         Emeline Carpenter Academy of Technology & Science

·         Nettie Marshall Academy of Dual Language

·         Thomas J. Rusk Academy of Fine Arts

Five students and one alternate student from each campus who participated in the Texas Bluebonnet Award Program will represent their school in the “Battle of the Bluebonnet Books”. Students will answer questions that demonstrate their knowledge and comprehension of the 20 Bluebonnet Award contenders selected by a committee of librarians from the Texas Library Association. The competition questions will be given in a Jeopardy-style game format.

The Texas Bluebonnet Award program is a statewide initiative that encourages students between third and sixth grades to read a minimum of five of the 20 books from the Bluebonnet Award master list. Students were able to then vote on their favorite title.

“Too often we give young people cut flowers, instead of teaching them to grow their own plants,” said author John W.  Gardner.

The Bluebonnet program promotes the cultivation of reading by allowing the children to make their own reading selections and ultimately select a favorite.

“Each year, 20 books are chosen as the ‘Texas Bluebonnet Award Master List’ by the TBA selection committee,” according to the Texas Library Association. “If students read a minimum of five books from the current master list (or have the books read aloud to them), they have the opportunity to vote for their favorite title during the month of January each year. The author of the book receiving the most votes statewide is declared the winner of the Texas Bluebonnet Award.”
