SFA Baptist Student Ministry to help maintain community blood supply
Posted 04 - 28 - 2015

As the weather heats up and spring blossoms into summer, many of us are looking forward to enjoying outdoor activities and travel plans. Active schedules make it easy to forget that the need for blood doesn’t change just because the seasons do. Volunteer blood donors are necessary each day to maintain the safe and sufficient blood supply in our community.

This May, as Carter BloodCare gears up for the summer ‘giving slump,’ we issue this challenge: don’t let blood donation take a vacation. Make giving blood a healthy habit; especially in the summer.

SFA Baptist Student Ministry is hosting a blood drive from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, at 225 E. College Street in The Coffee Cup. For more information or to schedule an appointment time, contact Belinda Murphy at (903) 574-4513.

Remember to make giving blood a part of your summer plans. Beginning May 1, visit carterbloodcare.org and see how giving blood has great rewards! Donate whole blood every 56 days. Giving blood often is the best way to maintain your local blood supply.

Keep in mind it’s a good idea to eat a nutritious meal and drink plenty of water at least an hour before giving blood. All donors must weigh at least 110 pounds, feel well on the day of donation, and present a government-issued photo ID each time they give blood. Potential blood donors may volunteer beginning at age 16 with parental consent; 17-year-olds may give independently and there is no upper age limit for donating blood. For more information on donor eligibility and to make an appointment, call 1-800-366-2834 or visit carterbloodcare.org.
