Nacogdoches ISD students place in D.A.R. contests
Posted 01 - 30 - 2015

The Nacogdoches chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.) awarded a number of students from Nettie Marshall Academy of Dual Language and Raguet Elementary at their 2014-2015 Junior American Citizens (J.A.C) contests.

Both contests were open to Nacogdoches ISD students ranging from first through fifth grade, with the exception of the banner contest, which was open to kindergarten through fifth graders. The theme for this year was “focusing on the future.” Through this theme, students were able to capitalize on the historical heritage of Nacogdoches and apply innovated ideas that reminded them of their future.

There were two contests: the art contest and the creative expression contest. The four categories in the art contest included: poster, stamp design, photo essay and banner making. The two categories in the creative expression contest were poem and short story writing.

J.A.C. committee chair Suzanne Warlick and Nacogdoches ISD GT coordinator Dr. Jo Lynn Corley, worked together to promote and organize the J.A.C. contests for the Nacogdoches Chapter. Their main goals were to impact the students in a positive way by giving them a true audience, a focus on authentic literacy and a purpose supported by the theme.

Dr. Corley expressed how proud she was of the students’ participation and hard work.

“I would like to thank the parents and teachers who help the students reach their goals in participating in this contest,” she said.

Student award winners will be recognized for their achievements at an awards luncheon. The luncheon will be held on Monday, March 9, 2015 in the grand ballroom in the student at Stephen F. Austin State University. The event will begin seating at 11:30 a.m. and commence at noon. The cost is $16 per person. The Nacogdoches D.A.R. chapter will pay for lunches for student winners. The deadline to make reservations is February 20.
