Blazing a Trail for Ab Abernethy set for March 10th

NACOGDOCHES-The Banita Creek Trail committee, part of the Friends of Historic Nacogdoches Inc., is hard at work raising funds and scheduling work days to continue work on the Banita Creek Trail.  The committee’s goal is to raise $25,000, a third of which has already been raised.  The monies raised will go towards fencing, irrigation, signage, and other trail work to complete the Banita Creek Trail project, which extends from Pearl Street to Powers Street. The ultimate goal is to connect the Lanana Creek Trail to the Banita Creek Trail creating a “walking trail loop” in Nacogdoches.

Dr. F.E. Abernethy, often referred to as Ab, has been thought of as the “The Trail Blazer of Nacogdoches” known for building the Lanana Creek Trail.  For years, Ab, along with others,   could be found spending countless hours in the woods with machetes and chain saws hacking, separating privet hedge, and sorted vines, literally “Blazing” a trail. “Ab’s hardwork and dedication is enjoyed by dozens of people every day,” said chair-woman Diana Walker.  “We all owe a lot to Dr. Abernethy for the treasure he has developed in Nacogdoches.”

The City of Nacogdoches and Mayor Roger Van Horn will declare March 10th as “Ab Abernethy Day” during the February 17th City Council meeting.

The Banita Creek Trail committee will honor Dr. Abernethy on Tuesday, March 10th with a banquet, “Come Blaze a Trail with Ab”, at Banita Creek Hall beginning at 6:00 pm.  Entertainment will be provided by Susie and the Jazzdaddys, along with the Gospelorians, a group that Ab has performed with in the past, at the East Texas Folklore Society. Mayor Roger Van Horn will present a special tribute to Ab during the banquet along with Dr. Dave Creech as Master of Ceremonies. Tickets go on sale at the Nacogdoches Convention & Visitors Bureau beginning Monday, February 2nd  through March 3rd.  Tickets are $35. All proceeds from the banquet will go directly to the Banita Creek Trail Beautification Project.
