The Nacogdoches High School football team learned Monday that they would receive two honors following the Sept. 26 defeat of the Lufkin Panthers — Dave Campbell Texas Football 5A Army Strong Team of the Week and KLTV’s Team of the Week.

For the second year in a row, the Dragons cranked out a nail-biting 38-35 victory against Panthers last Friday.

Coach Bobby Reyes said he and the team are excited and honored by the recognitions.

“I’m just happy for our kids,” Reyes said. “It’s good any time you get recognition for their efforts on the field. When you get an award like (Dave Campbell’s team of the week), it’s a pretty big accomplishment.”

Spectators from both schools were on the edge of their seats during the annual rivalry. Reyes talked about the mindset of his players during the game.

“I thought we executed our game plan pretty well and that our kids performed at a high level,” he said. “It was exciting to get a win like that in front of a very big home crowd.”

KLTV in will present their award today, Tuesday September 30 at 4 p.m. at the NHS practice field. The team will receive the RED ZONE GAME of the WEEK football.

The U.S. Army will make the Dave Campbell presentation in the coming weeks.
