School is about to be in session, but that doesn’t mean recess is over.  Beginning in September, Nacogdoches Parks Advocacy League (PAL) members will host bi-monthly play dates on the first and third Fridays of each month at various City parks to encourage visitation and knowledge of all the parks managed by the City. The play dates will be held after school from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. and are open to all ages. The first “PAL in the Parks” playdate will be held Friday, September 5 at Temple Park Spray Station, 1100 Martin Luther King Blvd.

“Most people in Nacogdoches are familiar with Pecan or Maroney Park,” says PAL member Brandi Cartwright. “They’re not as sure about ‘Banita Creek North’ or ‘Lakeside Park,’ even though they have probably been there. We want them to know about all the opportunities for outdoor play and family gathering throughout town.” The play dates are also meant to address safety in the park, an issue that looms large for any parent. “Members of our organization will be at every scheduled play date in our PAL shirts so that parents can not only anticipate other children for theirs to play with, but also know that someone familiar is nearby,” explains Michelle Cox, PAL Vice President.

Though donations can be made to the group at any time online or through the special tax-deductible fund established with the City, PAL in the Parks play dates are strictly for fun and do not have any costs or necessary equipment associated with them. “Just come out to enjoy the park and play,” says Cartwright. “Simple as that.” Families are welcomed to bring snacks or a picnic. Future play dates and locations will be posted on the group’s Facebook page prior to each event.

Nacogdoches PAL (Parks Advocacy League) is a community-action group founded in June 2014 by a group of citizens to improve the aesthetics and function of Nacogdoches City parks and park facilities for year-round enjoyment by the whole community via organized stewardship and funding development.
