Leadership class forming now

The Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce is accepting applications for the Leadership Nacogdoches 2014-15 class from those who are ready to work for the success of Nacogdoches and are ready to serve.



The purpose of LN is to build a network of community leaders by educating the participants about community issues, challenges, resources and opportunities. LN presents a range of options for involvement, and the graduates are prepared for the responsibilities of leadership.



"Not only do you get to meet and work with fellow members of our community, but you receive in-depth knowledge about how our city, county, state and local businesses work and meet the leaders that make things happen," said Becky McMorries, owner and head coach of Nac Endurance and an LN alumna. "Leadership skills are stressed throughout the program along with making connections that will be beneficial for years to come."



Program co-chairs Paul Smith III, Roy Blake Insurance Agency, and Charlotte Ashcraft, BancorpSouth, work together with all the sessions' organizers to give the class the best possible learning experience.



"A mandatory weekend Orientation Retreat at the SFA Piney Woods Conservation Center in Broaddus kicks-off the program on Sept. 5 and 6," Aschraft said. "The nine-month program will offer opportunities for the class to explore Nacogdoches County with field trips and meetings with current leaders. One day each month is set for learning about the county’s history, services for people with disabilities, public education, government and SFASU."



In February, the class will travel to Austin for a three-day state government session at the capitol that will include participation in Nacogdoches-SFA Days.



"A significant commitment of time and money are required of each LN member. But the returns can be immeasurable no matter the class member’s profession, age or length of time living in Nacogdoches," Smith said. "If someone were to glance at a list of current leaders such as county commissioners, city council, business owners and administrators in education and financial institutions you would see a list of names of many Leadership Nacogdoches graduates that proves the program’s worth. ”



The Chamber will accept scholarship fund donations for the program. As a show of support for the future of the program, the recent graduates of the LN 2013 class have made a commitment to provide a scholarship to assist a deserving applicant with the $945 tuition fee.



 “Supporting the program in that way sets an excellent example of leadership for others to follow,” Smith said.

Leadership Nacogdoches is a program of the Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce that was created in 1982. At that time chamber President Nancy Speck, past President Tom Choate and President Elect Barham Fulmer led the steering committee that organized the program. In following years, adjustments were made including moving from an annual to a biennial program.
