Nacogdoches High School students attended the National French Contest/Le Grand Concours in March and saw two French 2 students earn the Laureat National distinction — Emily Roux and Kevin Roux.
The pair ranked third place nationally in the Level 2 contest.
Three students ranked in the top 20 percent of French I students nationwide — Alenia Whatley, Kendall Whitbeck and McKenna Ethington. Also, Keara Malone earned a Certificate of Honor for ranking in the top 20 percent of French 3 students nationwide.
“I think that our results in this contest are something for NHS and Nacogdoches to take pride in,” said Kristin Wright, NHS French Teacher. “I have poured my heart and soul into building a strong French program at NHS, and the pride I feel in my students and their success cannot be overstated!”
The National French Contest is an annual competition sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French that allows students of French with similar educational backgrounds to compete by taking a written test.
All students nationwide are eligible, including those who are not AATF members. All Pre-AP students and select students from regular French 1 and French 2 who have maintained an A or high B average at NHS are chosen to compete. This year 55 ninth through twelfth grade students represented NISD.
The National French Contest is organized into levels and divisions. Each level corresponds with the level of French in which the students are enrolled.
After the written exam, students are ranked based on scores, with the highest ranking first. The exam is a completion exam, so it is set up for students to fail.
The exam consists of three parts: listening comprehension, reading comprehension and sentence completion. Students are given one hour to complete the exam that covers not only what students have learned in class, but everything to which they could have been exposed.
NHS has also had numerous other students rank in the 80th percentile or about in the last 5 years.
