Rookie middle school math team gets Cinderella win at regional competition
Posted 02 - 12 - 2014

Nacogdoches group of rookie sixth graders and a first-year coach took a regional math competition by storm last week.

The Mike Moses Middle School team left the MathCounts event on Feb. 7 at Angelina College in Lufkin with a first-place win, a trip to state and the regional coach of the year.

The competitive mathematics program tested the Mike Moses students’ skills through "bee" style contests and pitted them against fellow East Texas sixth, seventh and eighth graders.

“I give full credit to the hard work and dedication of my students,” said Mike Moses MathCounts coach Andy Watts. “Our MathCounts team is now a tour-de-force at the state level. Having a state-bound MathCounts competition team is just one example of the many great things happening at Mike Moses Middle School.”

Sixth graders taking part in the event included Sydney Rankin, Adam Engstrom, Daniel Morales, Nana Antwi-Boasiako, Jordan Engstrom, Alex Taaffe, and Sergio Sauceda.

Watts, a second-year teacher, earned coach of the year for producing a newly incepted group of rookie sixth graders to the state tournament — a competition overwhelmingly represented by some of Texas’ brightest seventh and eighth grade math students.

“In going up against more experienced and upper-level students, our sixth graders at Mike Moses have accomplished what more seasoned teams only dream,” Watts said. “Moments like this truly make me proud to be a teacher at Nacogdoches ISD.”

The next stop for the MathCounts team will be the State Competition Finals in Austin on March 22.
