Cole Art Center to host second screening of ‘Calling Home the Dead’
Posted 01 - 02 - 2014

The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and SFA Friends of the Visual Arts will present a second free screening of “Calling Home the Dead” at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3, in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

First shown on Nov. 1 in conjunction with the opening of the exhibition “Día de los Muertos: The Art of the Living and the Dead,” this film, directed and edited by Jim Hill, tells the story of the villagers of Lake Pátzcuaro, Mexico, who lovingly clean and decorate the graves of loved ones with handmade gifts, marigolds and special foods as they prepare for Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead.

A WORLD PREMIER documentary by art student Kat Garcia featuring interviews with artists who created Day of the Dead altars for the exhibition will be shown prior to the main feature.

The exhibition “Día de los Muertos: The Art of the Living and the Dead” can be viewed in Ledbetter Gallery through Jan. 4. The serigraphs of John August Swanson will be displayed in Reavley Gallery through Jan. 11. The next upcoming exhibition, “Texas Art Quilts 1993-2011” will run from Jan. 14 through March 30 in Ledbetter Gallery.

The First Friday Film Series is sponsored in part by the Nacogdoches Junior Forum.

The Cole Art Center is located at 329 E. Main St. For additional information, call (936) 468-1131.
