NHS Volleyball lands two on Academic All-State

NACOGDOCHES — The Texas Girls Coaches Association honored two of Nacogdoches High School volleyball team members for their work both on the court and in the classroom.

Nacogdoches seniors Emily Caldwell and Sydney Watson received TGCA’s Academic All-State recognition — an honor reserved for only a handful of students across the state.

Academic all-state athletes must be graduating seniors who have a cumulative grade point average of 94 or higher, are varsity participants or members of the support staff of that sport in good standing, and are of good moral character, according to the TGCA website.

This year, there were more than 250 high schools with 4-A classification in the state of Texas and just more than 200 players received the honor – two of them from Nacogdoches High School.

NHS head volleyball coach Carol Allen said these athletes are the type of players coaches “dream of having.”

“These two young ladies are the epitome of what we strive for as coaches and educators,” said Allen.  “They are not only leaders on the floor, but in the classroom as well.”

She also added that such honors should be “treasured above any trophy.”

“These kids prove that you can be involved in extra-curricular activities and be very successful in the classroom,” Allen said.  “I am very proud to have had the honor of being their coach.”
