NACOGDOCHES — Nacogdoches ISD students with an interest in the arts are getting a closer look at life behind the community theater curtain.

Nacogdoches ISD Gifted and Talented Program has joined the Lamp-Lite Community Theatre to present the holiday classic, “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.”

The collaboration originated from Nacogdoches ISD seeking ways to help students make connections from academic content to real world applications. By being part of “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever”, students are exposed to a career possibility outside of classroom work.

Fifteen students from the GT Program are among the cast.

Students auditioned for the play on Nov. 12, with improvisational tryouts that were open to students 7 year old and older.

“I am excited about this opportunity for NISD to partner with LampLite Playhouse in presenting BCPE,” said Katherine Whitbeck, who is both a Lamp Lite performer and Nacogdoches High School teacher.  “NHS performed the play annually from 1985-2004, and now LampLite has taken over the tradition, providing students in NISD a theatrical experience that they might not otherwise experience and providing the opportunity for the LampLite Players to welcome more talent into our troupe.”

Lamp Lite Community Theatre provides student with the opportunity to develop their talents in the fine arts and practice their skills.

“Students will learn how to personally define their gifts and talents while developing an appreciation for our local community resources,” said Dr. Jo Lynn Corley, Nacogdoches ISD coordinator for the Gifted and Talented Program.

The students in the cast include Marin Beal, Stuart Beal, Nicole Bowman, Kamden Hathaway, Kealy Hathaway, Jayla Gossett, Jordan Engstrom, Tanasia Austin, Lillian Williams, Elina Page, Lorelai Parkhurst, Slater Boaz, Natalie Schulz, William Johnson, and Mikah Murphy.

Performances are scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 19, at 10 a.m. and noon; Friday and Saturday, December 20 and 21 at 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 22 at 2 p.m.  Tickets are $8 for minors and students; $12 for seniors; and $15 for all others..
