After High School Comes College
Posted 12 - 05 - 2013

Preparing students for college starts early at Nacogdoches Independent School District.

In partnership with Stephen F. Austin State University and a group of avid community supporters, Nacogdoches ISD is making post-secondary school an expected step in the educational plan with “After High School Comes College.”

“After High School Comes College” gets an early start at 9 a.m., Friday, Dec. 6 at SFASU’s William R. Johnson Coliseum when NISD’s nearly 500 fifth graders will receive Future Jack t-shirts to wear on the district’s spirit days.

The shirts were purchased with donations from local businesses and individuals including Jackbackers, SFASU Office of Admission, NIBCO, First Bank and Trust of East Texas, BancorpSouth, James I. Perkins College of Education at SFASU, Austin Bank, NISD Academic Services, and NISD College and Career Coordinator Keri Launius.

Students will be completing a “Commitment 2021” card, which says they will continue their education after they finish high school.

NISD Superintendent Dr. Fred Hayes will address the students, along with others on hand, including school and community leaders and the SFASU cheerleaders.

Finally, the fifth graders will tour the SFASU campus, which for many, serves at their first glimpse into college life.

“After High School Comes College” adds another layer to NISD’s evolving college-ready culture.

The district helps Nacogdoches High School students earn college credits through the Early College High School program – a partnership with SFASU – and offers a Go Center where NHS students can learn about and apply for colleges and technical schools.

A Mobile Go Center  also is available for parents and students to research colleges, submit college applications, and apply for financial aid.  The Mobile Go Center will be used in different locations throughout the Nacogdoches area creating more opportunities for Nacogdoches students to further their education after high school.
