With the importance seat belts often overlooked, the Texas Department of Transportation is bringing the message home to Mike Moses Middle School students.

TXDOT’s Allison Beck will present the Seat Belt Saves Lives presentation to eighth grade health classes at the school from 12:50 to 3 p.m. on Monday, October 21.

“Presenting this information and outlining the consequences, as well as the rewards, for wearing your seat belt properly is an invaluable lesson at any age. Presenting this to students will hopefully make them understand seat belts’ importance,” Beck said.

A seat belt roll over convincer will be used as a visual aid to show the cause and effect of seat belt use.

It will simulate a rollover car crash using dummies to demonstrate three seat belt uses. One will show no seat belt, the other two will show the seat belt used correctly and incorrectly.

This visual presentation shows students how a car crash can have internal effects.

“Hopefully, the visual of the rollover as well as hearing stories of crashes right here in their community will reach them and change their point of view of seat belts,” Beck said.

Along with the convincer, Beck will provide local statistics of how seat belts saved lives or could have saved lives.  She also will discuss financial consequences of not wearing a seatbelt and being issued a ticket.

There is hope students who take part in the presentation will share what they learn with family members and friends.

The end goal of “Seat Belts Save Lives,” Beck said, is to “to educate individuals on ways to make our roadways a safer place for themselves and others.”
