Golden Dragons perform in Longview for annual Region XXI UIL Marching Band Competition
Posted 10 - 10 - 2013

The Annual Region XXI UIL Marching Band Competition will be in Longview at the Longview High School Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013.

Bands from across the East Texas area will compete against a set standard for Division ratings assigned by a panel of three adjudicators.

“Normally, the competition is held at Stephen F Austin, but that is the same time as Homecoming activities this year”, said Nacogdoches ISD Director of Fine Arts and Bands Glynn Wells. “The community has always been very supportive of not only the NHS band, also of it’s other local bands, and we want to encourage people to continue to show it’s support of the students who have worked very hard all fall to prepare for this educational activity.”

All bands will be judged against an evaluation instrument with set standards for each numerical rating that is assigned by one of three judges. Each assigned rating has a meaning (i.e Division I – Superior through Division V - Poor). The judge also offers performance suggestions via audio/video and written comments.

“This contest is an excellent way to base the direction of our band program and our teaching methods,” Wells said.

The Saturday competition encourages community support from not only Nacogdoches, but other areas as well.

“And most importantly, with the competition being held on Saturday, students are not taken out of the academic day ,” Wells said. “The competition will begin at 9:30 am with the 1A schools and continues through the 5A competition ending at 9:15 pm with Longview High School.”

A few local bands competing are: Timpson 10:45 AM; Tenaha 9:45 AM; Joaquin 11:45 AM; Garrison 1:20 PM; Shelbyville 10:00 AM; San Augustine 11:15 AM; Arp 2:35 PM; Center 4:15 PM; Diboll 4:00 PM; Tatum 3:05 PM; Carthage 5:15 PM; Crockett 2:50 PM; Hudson 6:45 PM; Henderson 6:30 PM; Jacksonville 7:30 PM; Longview 9:15 PM; NACOGDOCHES 8:30pm; Lufkin 9:00 PM; and Robert E Lee (Tyler) 8:45 PM
