Baking with Berries the Brookshire Brothers way!
Posted 05 - 23 - 2013

Calling all cooks and bakers!  Brookshire Brothers invites you to submit your berry best blueberry pie recipe for the contest featured at the 24Th Annual Texas Blueberry Festival.  Last year’s top three winners featured in The Daily Sentinel Food section on June 5 will tell you it’s a friendly but fierce competition featuring the second most popular berry in our country – THE BLUEBERRY!

The Blueberry Pie Contest is a way to promote the blueberry and highlight the fabulous cooks throughout the company’s market area.  Company President and CEO Jerry Johnson says, “It’s at the core of what we do – sell groceries and celebrate family and community.  This contest brings out some of the best cooks around.  The healthy competition and the opportunity to get the bakers in our stores with a 10% B2B discount card is a win-win for us.”

In addition to $500, $300 and $150 Brookshire Brothers gift cards for the top winners, festival goers will get to vote on the PEOPLE’S CHOICE.  That prize winner will get a $300 gift card from Brookshire Brothers.”  Registration is underway now at The Chamber and the Convention and Visitors Bureau.  Those that sign up in advance will get a B2B discount card to purchase their groceries.

Brookshire Brothers is pleased to highlight last year’s award winners by featuring their recipes in the June 5 Food Section. They are Fonda Martin – 1st place, Kay Bowers - 2nd place, and Keith Wright – 3rd place.

Will there be an ample crop of blueberries in our stores to fuel the contest?  Our produce experts say in spite of a tough growing season, with unseasonably cool weather late into the spring, Brookshire Brothers will have the pick of the berries!   Though Brookshire Brothers stores carry local berries when they’re available, if they have to go outside the region to meet the local demand, they will.

Look for Nacogdoches Store Directors Vincent Smith and Junior Guerrero at the Festival. They will be signing up visitors for and help folks ‘get connected’ on line for money saving Brookshire Brothers coupons and contests.

Brookshire Brothers will also be giving away an iPAD for those who ‘get connected’ at  bbrosCONNECTS on line!

COBBLER LOVERS – GO LIGHT! (Blueberry-Peach Cobbler)

Moderation – that’s the key when it comes to desserts.  Brookshire Brothers Healthy  Living Spokesperson Amy McLeod, RD says you don’t have to deprive yourself of wonderful cobblers this summer.   This Blueberry-Peach Cobbler submitted by Lufkin’s Jane Ainsworth can be lightened up with ease.  McLeod says it’s even appropriate for diabetics to enjoy.  “It’s all about portion control and not overdoing it,” says McLeod.  On the cobbler, she suggests using Splenda instead of sugar and simply making it a single crust cobbler instead of a double crust cobbler. McLeod will be sharing these tips and a whole lot more on Saturday, June 9th at COOKING UP THE BLUES at the Blueberry Festival!
