Students work on display at open houses across NISD
Posted 02 - 15 - 2013

During the next few weeks, parents and community members will get a first-hand look students’ work across the district.

McMichael Middle School, Fredonia Elementary and Thomas J. Rusk Academy of Fine arts each will open its doors to display accomplishments and seek parent involvement.

On Monday, Feb. 18, McMichael Middle School presents learning in a different light.  Discovery Night is scheduled from 5:30 to 7 p.m. to  showcase all areas of academics and other special programs offered at the school.  Among those to be featured: the Robotics teams, Model UN teams, and Gifted and Talented students.

Student achievement is the focus of Nacogdoches ISD and few understand that better than Virginia Ploch of McMichael Middle School.

“So many times we focus on testing and emphasize the negative outcomes of testing and over-testing,” she said.  “We have hard-working students who do not get the recognition in something in which they excel and they enjoy doing after school or on weekends. This is exactly what this night is all about for our school and our students.”

Fredonia Elementary School is planning an Open House night to focus on math and parent involvement. Family Math Night is set for Tuesday, Feb. 19 from 5:30 to 7 p.m.  Teachers will offer math games for families to play and learn together.

Thomas J. Rusk Academy of Fine Arts scheduled a Math and Science Night on Feb. 28 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. to encourage community involvement.  The evening begins with an educational forum at 5:30 p.m. to introduce free Websites that help students with math and science.  Teachers also will give demonstrations in science and  games to make math fun for students.
