Superior Rating for Nacogdoches HS and McMichael MS Choir Students
Posted 02 - 11 - 2013

Nineteen Nacogdoches High School and McMichael Middle School students brought home Superior ratings from their UIL Solo and Ensemble contests on Feb. 2.

For the competition, each singer learned a song from a selected list to perform by memory in front of a contest judge.  The singer was required to learn the song outside of class, primarily on their own with very few after school rehearsals.  The judge will then give them a score: Average, Excellent, or Superior.

Six students from McMichael received Superior ratings: Emily Boyland, seventh grade; Kail Consford, seventh grade; Emma Eagan, seventh grade; Rachel Svehla eighth; Ke’aundra Teal, eighth grade; and Emma Ward, seventh grade.

“Solo and Ensemble is a special accomplishment for these students because they must learn their music primarily outside of class on their own,” said McMichael choir director, Nicole Stewart.  “They all worked extremely hard and I am blessed to work with such talented young ladies.”

The Nacogdoches High School choir also had an exceptional performance at their competition with 13 students receiving Superior ratings: Aaron Cortes, 11th grade; Carmisha Daniels, 11th grade; Laura Dunn, ninth grade; Reagan Fitch, ninth grade; Junior Garcia, 12th grade; Emily Gonzales, ninth grade; Katheryn Kendrick, 12th grade; Katie Marshall, 12th grade; Nichole Marshall, 11th grade;  Macey McKnight, 12th grade; Michelle Montero, ninth grade; Katherine Sensabaugh, ninth grade; and Manuel Vazquez, 12th grade.

Ryan Smith, NHS choir director said he was proud of his students and their accomplishments and expects great things in the future.

“The students that received superior ratings have proven that they have the talent and the work ethic to achieve success,” he said.

High school students who made a Superior rating on a Class 1 solo have the opportunity to compete in the All State Solo and Ensemble Contest at the University of Texas in Austin on May 25.
