Summer, a season designed for trying new things, moving out of the normal routine, exploring more.
We are lucky to have a variety of activities, right here in Nacogdoches, that make enjoying summer to its fullest possible.
Katy Crawford, chamber of commerce vice chair of Special Projects and Fundraisers, and her family make a point to enjoy their traditional summertime favorites as well as to find something new to try.
"My daughters love the summer camps at the City recreation center and SFA's campus rec center. Our family treats the Saturday farmers market as an outing, and we enjoy afternoons in the parks and gardens," Crawford said. "Plus, we make sure we have Splash Kingdom Waterpark season tickets in hand on opening day!"
Her daughters, Claire, age 11, and Chloe, 8, are old enough to make their own suggestions about how the family spends their precious free time. After winning a raffle item donated by downtown merchant Glass Castles Stained Glass Studio & Gifts, the family is discussing the classes that owners Teresa and David Darby hold for adults and children.
"I appreciate activities that expand the girls' minds as well as provide entertainment," Crawford remarked. "When Teresa explained how stories are told through stained glass pieces along with the craftsmanship skills of the art, our interests were drawn deeper into the idea of creating our own pieces."
Glass Castles is not unique in injecting "fun" into their regular business day. In fact, many Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce members are successfully innovative in their businesses, tapping into recreational and sporting industries.
Escape Nac requires puzzle solving thinking to break out of locked situation rooms.
Meadow Ridge Archery and Gun welcomes groups, individuals and invites the community to participate in seminars and events.
Nacogdoches Blackbelt Academy exercises the body and mind.
Opportunities to burn energy can be found at Hex Pit, Fitness 360, Newbies Fitness and Morning Glory Yoga Studios. Contact A&P Inflatables or Party'N Things / Space Walk of East Texas for an all-day bouncing party or call Roselake Ranch for pony parties.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Deep East Texas and Gobel School of Dance expand their programs for the summer and children's theatre productions are performed by SFA Fine Arts students and Lamp-Lite Theatre players.
Take advantage of long days to get in late afternoon rounds of golf at Piney Woods Country Club and Woodland Hills Golf Club.
On top of all of those choices, day trips offer exciting experiences. Nacogdoches County Chamber members located outside the County include Cherokee Trace Drive-Thru Safari and the Texas State Railroad.
Find contact information for all of the businesses listed above in the chamber's business directory at www.Nacogdoches.org. Plus, community events are listed in the online calendar. Click through the Visit page and discover more ideas for enjoying sweet summertime.
