Stepping out of traditional health care
Local physician offers health plan options

Continuously asking "why" brought Dr. Jeremy Smith, MyMD Select, out of the traditional healthcare system to a new place in his medical practice.
Smith offers an option that decreases employers' health plan costs while other health plans renewal costs are increasing. He will present the new plan at the Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce Fourth Friday Luncheon set for noon to 1 p.m., Friday, June 23 at Austin Hall, 4603 North St.
"Healthcare is broken and no one knows why," Smith said. "I'm going to give the linear history from 1930, almost a 100-years of history of how we got here."
Smith will also explain what a health plan is, and how it can be built and customized. He will cover the concept of self-funding and give examples of what he has done over the past few years for businesses including some of our local employers.
"I started doing something about it three years ago," Smith said, "and this model has grown from the Nacogdoches area into a larger region."
There are now four MyMD Select offices in Longview, Lufkin, Tyler and Nacogdoches.
"More doctors are stepping out of the broken system to a new emerging 'concierge medicine' or 'direct primary care,'" Smith said. "It's not that hard. What I'm doing are basic, reasonable, sensible concepts."
The Fourth Friday Luncheon serves as the Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce monthly membership meeting, and the public is invited to attend. Registration is requested by 4 p.m., Wednesday, June 21, and lunch is $16 per person. Contact the Chamber at 936-560-5533 to make reservations.
Smith invites all to "come learn why the health care system is broken and how to step out of it."
