TTC and MRTCH Ribbon Cutting

Thursday, January 21, Nacogdoches ISD celebrated the official opening of the Nacogdoches Technical Training Center and the new location of the Malcolm Rector Technical High School.

Many city, county and local businesses were in attendance for this event. Angelina College President, Dr. Michael Simon, as well as other officials from Angelina College were also present.

Also, in attendance was Mrs. Lawanda Rector, wife of the late Dr. Malcolm Rector, former Superintendent of Nacogdoches ISD and strong advocate of vocational education.

“Malcolm would be extremely honored by this,” she said. During her husband’s education career, Mrs. Rector said his top priority was to assure that “every student in Nacogdoches Independent School District had the ultimate opportunities to learn. This school takes a big step in that direction.”

The Nacogdoches Technical Training Center was an effort started many years ago by several local county officials and the Nacogdoches Economic Development Corporation. Soon the City of Nacogdoches and Angelina College, along with many community businesses, joined in to search for funding. Through a grant from Deep East Texas Council of Government, the project began. After several delays, Nacogdoches ISD became involved and has been able to complete the project as it is today.

The TTC is a place where high school students will leave and enter the workplace with skills and certifications in place necessary to be employed at local businesses. Classes will be available for anyone in the community.

“I am honored to be able to stand before you today and tell those of you who started the race that with this ribbon cutting, the dream that was in that old Beer Warehouse; the dream of a Technical Training Center for our community is a reality. In this case it really did take a village.” Said Dr. Fred Hayes, Superintendent of Nacogdoches ISD.
